Mar. 9, 2010 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- SALEM -- With less than two hours to go before the deadline, it looks like at least five House Republican incumbents will face challengers in the May primary.
Reps. John Huffman, R-The Dalles; Sherrie Sprenger, R-Scio; Kim Thatcher, R-Keizer; Bob Jenson, R-Pendleton, and Greg Smith, R-Heppner all pulled challengers, according to candidate filings with the Secretary of State's office. Jenson and Smith drew the ire of some Republicans last year when they voted with Democrats in support of tax increases. Jenson provided the critical 36th vote on a proposal raising corporate and business taxes. Smith joined Jenson in voting to increase taxes on high-income earners.
Both proposals were eventually endorsed by Oregon voters in January's special election.
